SODIUM CLOUDS 2007

BIG SKY PUMP 2006
The pump island at the dead truckstop in the completely abandoned "town" of Coaldale in west-central Nevada. Night, full moon, mercury vapor light (the green cast), purple- and red-gelled flashlight. 4 minute exposure, give or take. Canon 20D. See more images from Coaldale.

 

GIANT ORANGE 1995
Along central California's old Highway 99, this peculiar old round OJ Stand was replaced by a shiny new square building a quarter mile further down the road. The old one was left to molder. 160T film, night, full moon, 8 minute exposure, red and green-gelled strobe flash.

I think that pile of white rocks might be a grave? A roadside settlement along Highway 58 near Kramer Junction, CA. This thing was at least 20 feet tall. I had to kneel in a room full of broken glass to get the shot in this San Fidel, New Mexico "Whiting Brothers" station. 160T film 5 minute exposure, blue and pink-gelled strobe flash and sparklers.

 

CONCOURSE 2001
The snack dome at the Jetsons inspired Burlingame, CA drive in. Torn down in 2002. 160T film 8 minute exposure, red-gelled strobe flash.

 

LENWOOD DRIVE IN 1992
This wind-battered screen was all that was left. Razed in the late 90s. 160T film, 8 minute exposure, night full moon. Available light only.

 

RUSTY BOOMERANGS 2002
This Jetsons era Googie gas station rots beside Interstate 80, near just east of Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats. 160T film 8 minute exposure, blue-gelled strobe flash.

Derelict cafe in California's High Desert. This is just south of Edwards AFB. Bet this place has been rattled by a few sonic-booms over the years. Canon 20D. UPPER MANAGEMENT 2007
The second floor corner office in the abandoned gas station / general store in Lockhart, CA. In the Mojave desert near Barstow. Canon 20D. Night, full moon outside, completely dark office, natural flashlight rotated on it's axis on the floor and up at the ceiling. The windows are composited from a different exposure (with no light painting) to cover up the strong reflections from the flashlight on the glass. I knocked back the opacity of the window layer to keep a small amount of the reflections. See more images from Lockhart.

THE WESTSIDE DRIVE IN 1990
The last car at this Sacramento drive-in has a long wait to see the 2nd feature. This little bit of Americana was bulldozed shortly after this photo was taken and is now a condo development. 160T film, 8 minute exposure, night, full moon, red and green-gelled strobe flash and green-gelled flashlight.

 

666 early 90s
Sunset on U.S. Route 666 in southern Arizona. Redesignated as U.S. Route 491 in 2003 from pressure by Christian groups and an AZ highway department tired of replacing stolen signs. 160T film, 30 second exposure and flashlight.

 

THE SILVER SLIPPER 2000
The YESCO sign boneyard, Las Vegas, NV. 160 Tungsten film, night, full moon, sodium and mercury vapor lights, blue and red-gelled strobe flash. This shoe is 15 feet tall.

Legendary location seen in many TV shows and movies containing hundreds of old signs. Almost everything here was donated and moved to the Las Vegas Neon Museum across town shortly after I shot here, this lot was turned into more manufacturing/warehouse space.
